Matching
gifts are now credited in the year in which the corporation's or
organization's contribution was received by the Rutgers University
Foundation. This marks a change from the foundation's previous practice
of using the year in which the matching gift was expected.
This
new system will effect all who utilize matching gifts in regard
to all membership benefits including annual reports and priority
points Thus, a donor who gave $500 in April 2000 and whose employer
matched that with a $500 gift that arrived at the foundation in
June 2000 will be credited with a $1,000 gift in the foundation's
annual report for the 1999-2000 fiscal year. In contrast, a donor
who gave $750 in April 2000 and whose employer is matching that
with a $750 gift in August 2000 will be credited with a $750 gift
in the foundation's report for the 1999-2000 fiscal year and a $750
gift in the report for 2000-2001.
The
amount of a corporation's or organization's contribution varies.
Some corporations match half of an employee's contribution or give
an equal amount. Other programs will double, triple, or even quintuple
the amount.
The
Scarlet R urges its donors to notify their employer of gifts they
make to Rutgers so that the contributions can be maximized if the
corporation or organization engages in the philanthropic practice
of matching gifts.
